It was in the presence of Souleiman Hassan Waberi, president of the Djiboutian Football Federation (FDF) and vice-president of CAF, that Jonas Kokou Komla signed his contract. Waberi did not hide his satisfaction, calling the Togolese a “valuable reinforcement” for women’s football in the country.

Komla knows Djibouti well, having worked there between 2018 and 2020 as coach of the under-20s. After his stint, he returned to Togo to lead the ASCK, before taking charge of the Togolese U20s in 2020. In 2021, he briefly took over as interim manager of the senior national team after the resignation of Claude Le Roy.

For Jonas Kokou Komla, this return to Djibouti has a special flavor. “The coach affirmed that he agreed to return to Djibouti, because he feels at home like family and above all motivated by the actions and efforts of the president of the FDF,” specifies an official press release from the Federation.

The FDF relies heavily on Komla’s experience, particularly in women’s football, to strengthen its teams. “Jonas is an expert who excels in his field and thus he will strengthen the technical potential of the Federation,” declared the FDF, confident in the Togolese’s abilities to meet this challenge.

A first test against Togo

The schedule does not give the new coach any respite. From next February, Djibouti will face Togo, its native country, in the first round of the qualifiers for the Morocco 2024 women’s CAN. A double confrontation which promises to be intense and rich in emotions for Jonas Kokou Komla, who will have to guide his team against a nation he knows well.

The first round of the qualifiers, scheduled for February 17 to 26, 2024, will be a real test for the technician and his players. Between sporting and symbolic issues, this challenge will set the tone for Komla’s mandate at the head of the Djibouti women’s team.
