Nikki Glaser takes on celebrities: everything except telling them who to vote for!

Golden Globes host Nikki Glaser opened the ceremony by mocking celebrities for their past presidential endorsements, which appeared to have had no impact. The event kicked off Sunday evening, with Glaser beginning by complimenting the celebrities in attendance, before quickly moving on to satire.

“I’m not here to make a fool of you tonight. I want you to know that. How could I really? You are all so famous, so talented, so powerful. You could really do anything… except tell the country who to vote for,” Glaser said, drawing laughter from the audience. She then added, “But it doesn’t matter!” You will succeed next time! If there is one. I’m afraid. »

Prominent Hollywood figures, such as Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Leonardo DiCaprio, supported Kamala Harris before the presidential election. However, despite these endorsements, Harris lost to President-elect Donald Trump, failing to even win in seven key states and flip votes in Trump-supporting counties in 2020.

After her announcement as host in August, Glaser expressed excitement about teasing the star-studded audience, taking inspiration from controversial former host Ricky Gervais.

“I am absolutely thrilled to host the Golden Globes,” Glaser said in a statement reported by a leading media outlet. “It’s one of my favorite nights of television and now I have a front row seat (actually, I think I have to host on stage). The Golden Globes are a big night for television and cinema, but also for comedy. This is one of the rare times when the entertainment industry accepts, even encourages, being affectionately mocked (at least, I hope so). (God, I hope so.) It’s an exciting job, but demanding because it’s live, unpredictable, and in front of Hollywood’s biggest stars (who might also be quenching their thirst next to their recent exes). »

“Some of my all-time favorite jokes come from the opening monologues at the Golden Globes, when Tina [Fey]Amy [Poehler] oh Ricky [Gervais] said exactly what we didn’t know we needed to hear,” she added. “I just hope to continue in this tradition (which might also get me into trouble). It truly is a dream job. Plus, I no longer have to feel guilty about every series or movie I watched last year. It was all worth it. Our point of view

The Golden Globes, beyond the brilliant spectacle, raise essential questions about the influence of celebrities in the political domain. Although their voices may seem powerful, the failure of some iconic figures like Kamala Harris to convince the electorate demonstrates that popularity is no substitute for political substance. It also highlights the importance of thoughtful and responsible public expression, a topic that could benefit from increased attention in Europe, where political leaders could consider a more engaged and authentic approach to their citizens.
