This Friday, January 3, Annalena Baerbock and Jean-Noël Barrot, German and French Ministers of Foreign Affairs, went to Damascus, capital of Syria, to meet with Ahmad al-Chareh (also called Abou Mohammed al-Joulani)new leader of the country since taking power on December 8.
Their meeting, which takes place under a mandate from the European Union, took place in the imposing presidential palace overlooking the capital. When they arrived there, the leader of the radical Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) welcomed the two ministers surrounded by a horde of advisors. If the latter shook hands – shyly and from afar – with Jean-Noël Barrot, he did not extend it towards his German counterpart.
