SUMMARY – Montreal 1, Chicago 2 (2nd period)
Indiscipline marked the start of the CH match in Chicago, while the Montreal team offered a double numerical superiority situation from the first minutes of the clash.
Tyler Bertuzzi took the opportunity to open the scoring, while Jayden Struble and Arber Xhekaj were simultaneously in the penalty box.
Forgotten to the right of Samuel Montembeault, No. 59 of the Hawks completed a passing game from Connor Bedard and Teuvo Teravainen.
The Habs managed to tie the game through their most prolific scorer, Cole Caufield, who scored his 20th goal of the campaign with 1:36 left in the first period.
Caufield received the puck from Mike Matheson behind the net from Arvid Soderblom, and he deftly made his way to the slot, before lifting the puck over the goaltender’s shoulder.
Nick Suzuki was also an accomplice in the net for No. 13, who reached the 20-goal plateau in a fourth straight campaign to start his career.
With 12:36 left in the middle period, Nick Foglino gave the locals their second lead of the evening, thanks to a clever deflection of a Wyatt Kaiser point shot.
Pre-match notes
The Montreal Canadiens will try to start the year 2025 on the right foot this evening against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Martin St-Louis’ troop could climb above the .500 mark with a victory at the expense of the Hawks.
Montreal will, however, have to make do without the services of winger Patrik Laine, struggling with flu symptoms, and defender David Savard.
Jayden Struble will take Quebec’s place on the blue line, while Michael Pezzetta will be CH’s 12th forward. He will skate alongside Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook to start the game.
Pezzetta had not played in more than two months, since October 27. He was therefore left out of 28 consecutive games by St-Louis.
The CH has a record of 17-17-3 this season and has won its last three games in spectacular fashion to close out the year 2024.
After starting their traditional holiday road trip with a loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on December 23, the Canadiens defeated the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas Golden Knights. The CH did not steal its three victories, winning these matches by a combined score of 12 to 4.
Samuel Montembeault will defend the team’s goal against the Hawks. This means that Jakub Dobeš should face the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday in Denver.
At the United Center, brothers Kirby and Colton Dach are expected to play their first professional match against each other.
A second-round pick of the Hawks in 2021, Colton is expected to make his NHL debut on Friday. The 21-year-old forward took part in line drills at Blackhawks practice on Thursday.
In the American League, he recorded an impressive total of 25 points in 30 games with the Rockford IceHogs this season. Kirby is also enjoying recent success, having scored three goals in his last three games, including the winning goal in CH’s comeback against Vegas on New Year’s Eve.
