HALIFAX — Halifax police say the 39-year-old man who allegedly killed a woman and her father on New Year's Eve is a fugitive wanted in connection with shootings at a Toronto nightclub in 2019.
Investigators say Matthew Costain died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound hours after fatally shooting 40-year-old Cora-Lee Smith and her 73-year-old father, Bradford Downey, in downtown Halifax on December 31.
Police say Costain was in a relationship with Smith and the deaths involve domestic violence.
Toronto police issued an arrest warrant for Costain on September 6, 2019, alleging he was involved in shootings at a nightclub a month earlier that injured four people.
The initial warrant stated that Costain was wanted for unlawful possession of a restricted firearm, aggravated assault and probation violation.
-The Rev. Jivaro Smith, the pastor to the grieving families of the Halifax victims, said a time of counseling, prayer and healing was planned Monday evening in the historically black neighborhood where they lived.
Mr. Smith, the senior minister of St. Thomas Baptist Church, announced that the church in North Preston, Nova Scotia, will partner with trauma counselors and 902 Man Up, a group non-profit established to reduce community violence, to offer assistance to anyone affected by the murders.
He said the small community in Halifax's eastern suburbs was stunned and saddened by the deaths, which are the fourth and fifth domestic violence-related murders in Nova Scotia since October.
