This Friday, January 3, the worst was avoided for the Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption church in Garnache (Vendée). A fire broke out early in the afternoon in the sacristy, adjoining the church, shortly before 2:30 p.m. The firefighters, around twenty, quickly brought the smoke under control, and prevented the fire from spreading to the roof and the church.
The alert was given by the technical services
Around 2:30 p.m., the church Notre-Dame-de-L’Assomption was empty. Around the church, employees of the city's technical services saw smoke from the roof of the sacristy. They then contacted the firefighters. Firefighters from La Garnache, Challans and Saint-Etienne-de-Mer-Morte were dispatched to the scene.
“A priori, it would be a human error, it would not be a gas or electricity fault, but this remains to be confirmed,” confides Denis Pochon, on-call representative in La Garnache.
-When the firefighters arrived in the sacristy and in the 10 m room2 adjoining, the floor was burning. Furniture and doors were damaged.
“The firefighters checked that the fire had not spread to the roof which is framed, they cut out part of the roof to ensure that it did not burn,”
By late afternoon, the fire was under control. It caused material damage: mainly beams, doors and furniture.
Sunday, no microphone or heating at mass
This Sunday, Epiphany Mass is planned. It will be well maintained. “But there will be no electricity or gas, for safety reasons they will remain cut off. So there will be no microphone or heating,” underlines the elected official. An electrician will come to the church on Monday to inspect and repair the electrical system. The fire did not cause any injuries.
