Ten regional issues to watch in 2025

1. Municipal elections

On November 2, 2025, voters in the 86 municipalities of the MRCs of Memphrémagog, du Granit, des Sources de Coaticook, du Haut-Saint-François and Val-Saint-François will vote on the identity of their next municipal council.

Several elected officials in the region have already signaled their intention to run for mayor again.

2. CTA decision on bypass route

The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) should position itself on the bypass project in the next year.

The OTC is still waiting for certain documentation to begin its analysis, which should subsequently take four to six months. Frontenac and are still contesting the project which began preparatory work in the Lac-Mégantic industrial park in November.

3. Expansion of Mont-Orford national park

The steps launched in 2006 to expand the Mont-Orford National Park (PNMO) should finally come to fruition next year.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, the decree authorizing the expansion of the PNMO could be adopted in 2025.

4. Purchase of Tergeo land

Val-des-Sources aims to finalize the purchase of the land for the Tergeo factory, formerly named Alliance Magnésium, at the start of the year.

The City intended to subdivide it into ten portions of 600,000 square feet in order to sell them to several companies. Val-des-Sources must wait until January 31, 2025 to find out if its offer will move to the next stage of the process.

5. Wind development to be confirmed

Several wind projects in different MRCs are currently under study. While the plans in Granit have been well received by the population, protest movements are emerging in other MRCs.

For example, in the case of Coaticook, the possibility of a project submitted by the end of 2025 has sparked numerous citizen reactions.

6. New regulation on flood zones

Uncertainty continues for residents living along waterways who fear the updating of regulations related to flood zones.

These could be enlarged by 30 to 40% according to the Quebec government. The new cards should be available in 2025.

7. Revitalization of the Weavers district

Once Magog has completed the overhaul of its urban plan in January, elected officials will turn to the Tisserands district.

This historic sector of the city will be entitled to a specific urban planning program which will determine its vision for the next decade. The procedures should begin around June.

8. Annexation of a Danville neighborhood

Val-des-sources has not yet decided whether they will agree to annex the 109 residences of the Pinard and Plein-Air estates into their municipality.

The elected officials of Danville had poorly received this possibility during the summer and Mayor Martine Satre confirms that the matter has not yet been resolved.

9. Contesting the regulation on tree felling

The controversial MRC des Sources regulation on tree felling continues to make waves. After its adoption last November, wood producers decided to challenge it by blocking snowmobile, cross-country ski and ATV trails.

They plan to continue the pressure tactics as long as the MRC has not relaxed its regulations.

10. Border surveillance

Issues related to the Canada-US border will remain present in 2025.

With the return to the presidency of Donald Trump, an influx of migrants without status is anticipated in the coming months. In the border towns of Estrie, increased surveillance will therefore be necessary.
