Darío Rodríguez, Racing’s new head coach, led his first training session with the team on Friday morning, January 3, kicking off the 2025 pre-season.
Rodríguez, who succeeds Eduardo Espinel, will be assisted by his brother Héctor ‘Samanta’ Rodríguez as assistant coach, as well as fitness trainer Pablo Placeres.
During Rodríguez’s inaugural training session, recruits were also present: Felipe Cairus, who joined Nacional, goalkeeper Facundo Machado (also from Tricolor) and winger Pablo Viudez, who arrived from Defensor Sporting. The rest of the squad will join the team on Saturday, January 4.
A recent addition to Sayago’s squad is winger Diego García, who joins from Liverpool. The 28-year-old playmaker has an impressive career, having played for several clubs abroad, including Estudiantes de La Plata, Talleres de Córdoba, Patronato and Emelec – a significant signing for La Escuelita.

Additionally, Ramiro Brazionis, a very promising defender, joined Racing after the club acquired 45% of his rights from Nacional.
-Last season, the team finished in seventh place, earning them a place in the 2025 Copa Sudamericana, their immediate challenge. In the next tournament, Racing will face Wanderers on Wednesday March 5 at 7:00 p.m., in the first phase of the continental competition.
Rodríguez’s arrival at La Escuelita marks his second stint as coach following his tenure at Peñarol in the 2023 season, where he managed 16 matches, achieving 9 wins, 4 draws and 3 defeats.
Throughout his career, in addition to his time at Peñarol, Rodríguez has also served as assistant coach to Diego Alonso with the Uruguayan senior national team, and to Jorge ‘Polilla’ Da Silva at Peñarol, Defensor Sporting, América de Cali in Colombia, and Ittihad Kalba in the United Arab Emirates.
