the surprise Opelka who eliminates Djokovic in the quarter-finals in Brisbane

The American, 293rd in the world, defeated the Serbian in two sets after a more than solid match. He will meet Mpetshi Perricard in the next round.

Huge surprise in Brisbane. Novak Djokovic, world No.7, was unceremoniously knocked out 7-6 (8/6), 6-3, this Friday by the American Reilly Opelka, ranked only 293rd, in the quarter-final of the ATP 250 tournament in Brisbane. A very ominous defeat for the Serbian before the Australian Open.

The 2 meter 11 American gave the Serbian no chance, notably hitting 16 aces and multiplying unstoppable shots. Djokovic, former world No.1 who is coming off a 2024 season without a Grand Slam title – a first since 2017 – wants to try to win a 25th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, his favorite major tournament which he won ten times, starting on January 12 in Melbourne.

Mpetshi Perricard therefore avoids Djokovic

In the semi-finals, Opelka will therefore face Frenchman Mpetshi Perricard, also a solid winner over his opponent Mensik in the quarter-final. A highly anticipated match between two men in good shape.
