The Premier League versus the Club World Cup: What’s the dilemma?

English league chief executive Richard Masters has expressed concerns about the tournament and its potential impact on domestic competitions.

As 2025 approaches, the highly anticipated Club World Cup will take place in the United States from June 15 to July 13. On the subject, Premier League CEO Richard Masters shared his thoughts on the new tournament and explained how it could affect the local league.

“The arrival of the Club World Cup will undoubtedly have an impact on the Premier League. If Manchester City or Chelsea reach the final, the league will resume just four weeks later, and players are contractually obliged to take a break three weeks. So how do you balance that? It’s getting more and more complicated,” he said on Sky Sports’ The Boardroom podcast.

“I think the proposed schedule is very difficult to implement. If the national leagues and players’ unions had been involved, better solutions for the dates of this tournament could have been found,” he added.

Notably, the Citizens and Blues will be the only teams from England to compete on North American soil. Pep Guardiola’s side will form Group G alongside Juventus, Wydad of Morocco and Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates. Meanwhile, Enzo Fernández’s team will be in Group D with Flamengo, Egyptian Esperance and León from Mexico.

On the other hand, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois defended the tournament, despite his disagreement with the schedule and number of matches. “The Club World Cup is something that needs to be done, but it’s difficult to find the right way to do it. I think the clubs want to help, but we all follow the rules and the schedule that is given to us, ” he argued on CNN Sports in Spain.

“I believe that footballers would have no problem playing nine months in a row with proper preparation and good load management. The other day I was playing with Valverde and I told him: ‘Your next vacation will be in 2027 .’ It seems crazy,” noted the Belgian.

For their part, the Merengues will be in Group H alongside Al Hilal, Pachuca and Nicolás Capaldo’s Salzburg, with their first match scheduled for Thursday June 26 in Philadelphia against the Austrian team.
