The price of butane gas cylinders revised upwards in 2025

The price of gas cylinders in Morocco is expected to increase during this year, in line with the process of gradual liberalization of prices. In accordance with the 2024 finance law, an increase of 10 dirhams already took place last year. These changes will continue in 2025 and 2026.

For the moment, the Compensation Fund allocates nearly 15 billion dirhams per year to butane gas subsidies. After the PLF 2024 provided for a reduction of around 10 billion dirhams, the partial decompensation in May last year was 2.5 dirhams for the 3 kg cylinder and 10 dirhams for the 12 kg cylinder. Thus, the same increase will be applied every year until 2026.

After the application of the second tariff revision, this year 2025, the price of the 12 kg cylinder will increase to 60 dirhams. However, the timetable for this change is not yet official. According to professional organizations, it would not happen at the start of 2025.

Mohamed Benjelloun, president of the Professional Association of Wholesale Liquefied Gas Depositories in Morocco, declared to Assahra Al Maghribia that the prices of 12 kg cylinders would not change in January 2025. He believes that the increase should take place around the middle of the current year. Despite the increase applied in May 2024, the report accompanying the PLF 2025 underlines the continued support of the State.

Previously, the government stressed that the reform of the subsidy system took place within the framework of “the establishment of the direct social assistance program (3.6 million beneficiary families until April 2024), based on the principle more effective targeting of households eligible for social support through the unified social register.
