“Health, happiness, joy in hearts”
It is with this formula that Yannick Moreau, the mayor of Sables-d'Olonne, begins his wishes for 2025, visible on his Facebook page.
The elected official is sitting at his desk, a Christmas tree behind him and a tricolor flag to his left. There is a little presidential side to all of this. But no, Yannick Moreau is not going to take advantage of this annual ceremony to announce some national ambition. But rather a withdrawal from public affairs.
“This is the last time that I present my best wishes to you as mayor of Sables d’Olonne, and president of its agglomeration.”
There you have it, the news from the start of the year is out: the mayor of Sables-d'Olonne will be leaving office.
The one who began his political involvement in the cabinet of Philippe de Villiers, after having studied in the very conservative Catholic Institute of Higher Studies, in La Roche-sur-Yon, then at the University of Nantes, left the movement villiériste (MPF) in 2012 and joined the UMP.
It was in Olonne-sur-Mer that he obtained his first mandate as mayor by shifting the town to the right in 2008. Then, in 219, after having worked for the merger of the three municipalities of Olonne-sur-Mer, Château-d'Olonne and Les Sables-d'Olonne, he became the mayor of this new commune in 2019. He is also president of Sables-d'Olonne Agglomération, which brings together five municipalities.
“In 2019, we succeeded in creating the new town of Sables-d'Olonne and gradually calming down unnecessary internal disputes, he declares in his vows. Which now allows us to look in the same direction, and to set a clear course for our maritime city, our city of fishermen, culture and adventure.”
Then, the elected official, who was also a member of parliament for a time, continues his quick assessment and outlines an explanation.
“I gave a lot, received a lot, made a few mistakes too, he said, but I can assure you of one thing: it is with a lot of heart that I gave 17 years of my youth and my energy to your side and to your service. Today, I feel like I did my part. I did my job. But I always thought that cemeteries were full of irreplaceable people and I always vowed not to become an old elected official clinging to his chair.”
The resignation of the mayor of Sables-d'Olonne is a surprise, especially since it comes shortly before the 2026 municipal elections. Why did Yannick Moreau choose to withdraw “by September 2025”according to what he announces.
“My loved ones know it well, he continuesI always dreamed of having a private life one day, after my public life. Well here we are. By September 2025, I will therefore hand over my responsibilities as mayor and president of the agglomeration.”
So it would be the desire to make oneself available for one's own? So what is this emergency that could not bear to wait until the end of the mandate? Perhaps the desire to place a “successor” or “successor” before the next deadlines?
Officially, we will not know more, Yannick Moreau is traveling, we are told in his press service and he will not answer journalists' questions until next Monday.
“We don’t always appreciate the inestimable chance we have to live here, in this urban area and this dream city by the sea. So, let’s savor it”concludes the one who brought the bay of Sables-d'Olonne into the restricted circle of the most beautiful bays in the world.
