Minister Aurore Bergé wants to “change the law” and “means” and calls for “a collective awakening”

Aurore Bergé wants “change the law” and “means” to better combat violence against women. The Minister Delegate in charge of Equality between Women and Men and the Fight against Discrimination calls for a “collective awakening”on Inter Friday January 3, while a first feminicide in the North mourned the transition to 2025.

“We only had to wait 4 hours for a woman to be murdered at the hands of her partner (…) we must act”urges the Macronist minister. On January 1, a 51-year-old woman, mother of two children, was found dead at her home in Hautmont, in the North. His companion was placed in police custody, after having himself called emergency services, admitting to having done “a big stupidity”.

“I was surprised to see that in the official press release [de la procureure de la République]we mention the supposed life of the victim”deplores Aurore Bergé. In this press release, the public prosecutor's office refers to adultery suspected by her spouse. “No matter his past, no matter his present, what matters is the author”insists the Minister Delegate responsible for Equality between women and men. “How is it in our society in France, in 2025, we still have men who act out, who hit, who are violent, who sexually assault?“, calls out the former MP who wants “change the law to change the way we look at this issue”.

Aurore Bergé wishes “better characterize things”. The former Macronist MP has tabled a bill which will be examined in January, on “coercive control” to make it “a crime strictly speaking”. “Violence against women is not primarily about beatings”she explains. “There is all the control that we put in place. We will control your accounts, your outings, your telephone, your associates, we will isolate you. You find yourself behind closed doors. And there, physical violence or violence sexual, has plenty of time to settle in.”

Aurore Bergé calls for “a collective awakening” on this social issue. “All of society must be able to be alert, to support, to hear, to listen, to decipher weak signals, because there is no environment where this does not exist. not”she adds, regretting that too often witnesses do not dare to call the police. The minister also assumes the State's share of responsibility in the first place. But to act, it requires “means”.

“I am obviously fighting to preserve and increase the ministry’s budget”assures Aurore Bergé. The minister wishes to put in place “social workers” trained throughout the territory and strengthen “the systematic training of police officers, gendarmes and magistrates”. She also wants to better support women victims, welcoming the deployment of a Women's Center in each department and the extension of the free 3919 number accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. “We still have to go further”she says. Aurore Bergé also asks for time to be able to act while the threat of censorship hangs over the new Bayrou government.
