Inter-line circulation: the experiment further extended

The experimentation of la circulation inter-filesimplemented in 2021 for motorized two-wheelers and three-wheelers, is being extended again until July 31, 2025. This initiative, carried out for more than 3 years, concerns 21 departments spread across several regions of .

What is inter-line traffic?

At present, Motorized two-wheelers and three-wheelers are not allowed to go up a line of vehicles in the event of a traffic jam. Before authorizing this practice, the government therefore launched an experiment to supervise and evaluate this possibility and thus guarantee the safety of all road users.

Initially, the experiment was to end on August 1, 2024. A decree published in the Official Journal extended it until September 15, 2024. Then, another decree extended it again until December 31, 2024.

Where does the experiment take place?

The inter-queue traffic experiment is taking place in 21 departments:

  • in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes : Drôme, Isère and Rhône;
  • in Hauts-de-France : the North;
  • in Île-de-France : Essonne, Hauts-de-Seine, , Seine-et-, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-d’Oise, Val-de-Marne and ;
  • in New Aquitaine : ;
  • in Occitania : Haute-Garonne, Hérault and the Pyrénées-Orientales;
  • in PACA : Alpes-Maritimes, Bouches-du-Rhône, and ;
  • in the " rel="tag">Pays de la Loire : Loire-Atlantique.

Furthermore, this experiment is subject to strict rules in order to limit the risk of accident:

  • inter-lane circulation is authorized only on motorways and roads with carriageways separated by a central reservationwith at least 2 lanes per direction and a maximum authorized speed of 70 km/h or more;
  • the speed difference between the motorcyclist and surrounding vehicles must not exceed 30 km/h and the speed of the motorized two-wheeler or three-wheeler must not exceed 50 km/h;
  • inter-queue circulation is carried out only on the 2 leftmost lanes of the roadway;
  • the practice is prohibited in the event of snow, ice or work on the road.

Failure to follow these rules may result in a deduction of 3 points and a fixed fine of 135 euros.
