An infant found dead in a garbage bag, a murder investigation opened

A tragedy shakes up the town of Mably (). The body of an infant was discovered on December 30, abandoned in a garbage bag on the edge of the -Digoin canal.

This macabre find pushed the Roanne public prosecutor's office to open an investigation into the “murder of a 15-year-old minor.” A call for witnesses has been launched to try to identify the child and elucidate the circumstances of the tragedy.

A chance discovery

It was a jogger who, shortly before 1 p.m., made this terrible discovery. While walking along the greenway along the canal, she noticed an abandoned black trash bag. Immediately alerted, the police went to the site to make initial findings. Divers were also mobilized to probe the waters of the canal, to ensure that no other elements were nearby.

Initially opened to “search for the causes of death”, the investigation quickly took a more serious turn in view of the elements collected on site.

Autopsy reveals first clues

The infant's body was transferred to the Saint-Étienne forensic institute where an autopsy was performed the next day, December 31. According to initial analyses, it is a little boy. “The child was of a size and weight compatible with a full-term birth, and did not present any malformation,” said the public prosecutor of Roanne, Xavier Laurent. These elements tend to prove that the baby was viable at birth.

However, the autopsy did not make it possible to precisely establish the date or causes of death. Additional examinations were therefore ordered to resolve these uncertainties. The prosecutor added that “the body had been hidden in a bag before being submerged”.

The investigation entrusted to the DIPN 42

Faced with the seriousness of the facts, the investigation was reclassified as “murder of a 15-year-old minor” and entrusted to the interdepartmental direction of the Loire national police (DIPN 42). Investigations are actively continuing to identify the victim and understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic case.

A call for witnesses has been launched by the authorities. “The circumstances of the discovery of the body suggest that other people may have noticed the presence of the bag or the body before the jogger raised the alarm,” declared prosecutor Laurent. He invites anyone with information, particularly concerning the moment or circumstances of abandonment of the body, to come forward without delay.
