Preview: January 2 Game – Senators vs. Stars

The Ottawa Senators are back on the ice to kick off 2025 as they take on the Dallas Stars starting at 8 p.m. (ET). Tonight’s game will be the team’s seventh in a row on the road and the first in a series of two games in two nights.

Fans will be able to follow this evening’s game on RDS2 or TSN5 or live on the radio on Unique FM or TSN1200.

The Senators wrapped up 2024 and a stellar December with a 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Sunday. Despite playing a second game in two nights on the road, the Senators showed no signs of fatigue against the Wild, scoring three unanswered goals to win. Ridly Greig, Josh Norris and Claude Giroux were the Senators’ scorers. Goaltender Leevi Meriläinen made 30 saves for his second career NHL victory.

Tonight will mark the first of two duels this season between the Senators and the Stars. The return game will be Sunday, January 12 at 5 p.m. (ET) when the Stars will be the visitors at the Canadian Tire Centre. Last year, the Senators (1-1) shared the honors of their two-game series against the Stars.

The Stars will enter tonight’s game having won their last two games. More recently, they disposed of the Buffalo Sabers by a score of 4 to 2. Looking for a second victory in a row, the Senators will also try to end Dallas’ short series of successes.

The three goalies made the trip to Texas: Leevi Meriläinen, Mads Sogaard and Anton Forsberg, who were on the ice for the game morning practice session. Forsberg has been sidelined by injuries since he was scheduled to start the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on December 14. Defenseman Artem Zub was also back in practice with the Senators. Zub hasn’t played since Nov. 23 against the Vancouver Canucks, also being sidelined by injury.

After the morning skate, head coach Travis Green announced that Zub will return to the Senators lineup while Anton Forsberg will be the backup goaltender in Dallas while Leevi Meriläinen will get the start.
