It appears that Sony is moving towards native emulation of PlayStation 3 games on the PS5, a feature eagerly awaited by many enthusiasts. In fact, according to a roadmap published by the Implicit Conversions studio, the same one that oversaw the emulation of the PS1 on the PS5, the development of an emulation package for “Syrup”, the engine that underpins classic PlayStation titles, started on PS5. However, the “Dreaming About” label on the roadmap suggests that the project is in its early stages. We remind you that currently PS3 games on PS5 are only accessible via the cloud, available with a PS Plus Premium subscription. Although this option is functional, it has limitations compared to native emulation. The latter would indeed make it possible to make the most of the hardware power of the PS5, guaranteeing improved graphics performance and a smoother gaming experience. A recent test carried out on an AMD BC-250 card, equipped with similar hardware to that of the PS5, showed that games such as Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and LittleBigPlanet can run without significant problems, although with some related bugs to the pilots.
Native emulation would also provide more opportunities for developers to update and improve PS3 titles. For now, PlayStation 5 users can continue to enjoy some PS3 games via the cloud, but the idea of a native emulator opens the door to a future where compatibility with classic titles could be more accessible and of best quality. While waiting for further updates, fans can hope that Sony accelerates development to bring native emulation of PS3 games to the PS5, realizing the dream of an increasingly complete PlayStation library full of options.
