In the presence of loving family and friends, Kevin Thomas O’Neill passed peacefully after managing with courage and dignity a serious illness over the course of his final years with us.
Born in 1964 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Kevin grew up in Sydney’s Hardwood Hill neighborhood. He was the seventh and youngest child of Mary (MacLean) and Ben O’Neill.
Kevin is survived by three brothers: Tim (Lois, Cape Traverse, PEI), Jim (“Jinks”) (Kathy, Sydney), and Greg (Hazel, Calgary); and two sisters: Janet (George, Sydney), and Patricia (James, Sydney). Kevin was predeceased by his brother, David (DeeDee, Dartmouth). Kevin is also survived by the love of his life, his partner Gisèle LeBlanc, of Moncton, New Brunswick.
Kevin adored the nieces and nephews who populated his life and made him, hands-down, the “cool uncle.” They are: Aidan, Alex, Andy, Cameron, Claire, Daniel, Gabriella, Grace, Kate, Kiley, Liam, Molly, Seamus and Virginia. Kevin was predeceased by his nephew, Adam, brother of Cameron. Kevin had ten great nieces and nephews.
Kevin graduated with a BA from Cape Breton University and a diploma in Radio Broadcasting from Humber College in Toronto, although a move to Vancouver led to a 25 year career with the federal government’s Canada Employment Insurance Commission. Wanting to spend his approaching autumn years back east, Kevin transferred to the Service Canada Centre in Moncton. Directly above Moncton, the planets aligned, and Kevin met Gisèle. He was home at last.
Having grown up surrounded by the splendor of Cape Breton, including a special love for Ingonish and the Cape Breton Highlands, and having lived for two decades amidst the stunning beauty of BC, Kevin now found himself equally enthralled by a gorgeous New Brunswick countryside and by people he found “beyond friendly.”
In his new home province, Kevin resided with Gisèle in downtown Moncton, but he was happiest in Bouctouche at the chalet. Next door were Gisèle’s sister, Chantal and her husband, Serge, along with their kids Adele and Simon. Along with Gisèle’s mother, Rose Marie, Kevin was warmly welcomed by his new family.
Throughout his life, Kevin loved politics, sports and music, and pints at the pub with the lads, where the conversation spanned from the silly and backslapping to the serious and profound. Kevin made friends easily and he had many. Perhaps there’s a word or phrase out there somewhere that transcends “well liked.”
For his friends in BC, his family for more than twenty years, his passing may be especially difficult. Twenty years is a long time. Lots of marriages and births and birthdays, family dinners and trips throughout BC and beyond were shared with this group of friends, many of whom are ex-pat Maritimers. “Uncle Kevy” will be especially missed by Eden, Callum and Ciaran.
Perhaps most telling, however, will be the sadness felt by Kevin’s friends from his younger days in Cape Breton, so many of whom he was still in touch with, forty and fifty years later, right up to his final days. Kevin will be missed but the memories of those who knew him, and the conversations and laughter that echo across decades, will ultimately shine through, permanently replacing the sadness. Kevin would not wish to be remembered any other way.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Oncology Clinic at the Moncton Hospital for their expertise and compassionate care,
in particular Dr Pierre O’Brien, medical oncolgist.
At the request of the family, there will be no visitation or funeral service at this time.
