Over the past 5 years, Belgian shipping companies have invested in ten new fishing vessels, which represent a great improvement, particularly in the area of sustainable development. “A shipowner needs profits to be able to invest in the future. But this is difficult to achieve after a year with such a significant drop in fishing. And the sector must also make many more investments to be able to meet the requirements to come from the European authorities”, indicated Tom Prememeur on Radio 2.
The Flemish fish auction nevertheless remains optimistic. “In certain fishing grounds, we can catch more soles again. But in other places, we are still seeing a drop in quotas again. And these are precisely the fishing grounds where our Belgian fleet is very active. We are also dependent on nature. Let’s hope that 2025 will be a good year.
Besides sole, Belgian fishermen also catch a lot of cuttlefish and plaice. But sole is the most profitable fish species for our fishermen.
