in 2025, the new gold rush

Goodbye to the discretion of white gold: after its return to favor through jewelry, the yellow metal is once again imposing itself on the wrists of lovers of luxury watches.

If time is money, this year, watches will be gold. In recent years, it has been common practice to prefer the sobriety of white gold pieces to yellow gold. From now on, camouflage is no longer required, and manufacturers are once again fully assuming the use of “yellow metal”.

A somewhat reductive term, moreover, since the renewed interest of enthusiasts embraces numerous shades of colors, ranging from the softest honey to champagne pink, including all types of matte, shiny, or sandblasted finishes. Many large manufacturers are now developing their own gold alloy not only for technical or aesthetic reasons, but also to meet traceability requirements.

This is particularly the case for Chopard and its ethical gold, produced in a responsible manner, which has adorned all its creations since 2018. The new Alpine Eagle XL chronograph is no exception. She reminds us in passing that gold is not reserved for evening watches, but also gives refinement to sports pieces.

Movement entirely made of gold

A snub to the uncertainties of a world in danger, the desire for gold also evokes the extravagance, freedom and splendor of the 1970s and 1980s. Periods that fascinate watch lovers today. It is for them that Piaget’s Polo 79 was recreated. The specialist on the subject places these precious pieces at the center of his collections.

The ultimate for enthusiasts is undoubtedly to own a timepiece whose movement is entirely made of gold. Few houses attempt this exercise, particularly because of the malleable nature of the material. But at least two independent manufacturers are taking up this challenge brilliantly: FP Journe and Parmigiani-Fleurier. For the latter, the recent Toric Petite Seconde stands out as a model of purity for aesthetes.

A sense of purity shared by Vacheron Constantin which, as a prelude to its 270th anniversary and after having successfully reintroduced its emblematic 222 model all in gold, is already delighting collectors with an automatic Patrimony featuring a subtly textured and graphic dial. This same sense of refined finishes allows Jaeger-LeCoultre to create a unique dial for its Reverso, worked with pink gold gadrooning. This new Tribute Chronograph model is a rare, limited edition piece, as desired as Cartier’s reissue of its Tortue Monopushoir Chronograph, with its exquisitely shaped case.
