Ukrainian cyber operations against Russia
Ukrainian intelligence services have repeatedly targeted Russia’s digital infrastructure in recent months. One of these operations disrupted the activities of Lukoil, a major Russian oil company, during the end-of-year holidays. This was reported by the Kyiv Post.
Between December 30 and January 1, Ukrainian cybersecurity specialists compromised Lukoil’s digital assets. This led to payment system failures at gas stations using the company’s mobile app. In addition, the “Evotor” smart terminal platform and the “Chestny Znak” product marking system were also affected.
Cyberattacks on Russian targets
The cyberattack caused significant disruption and financial losses to the retail sector as consumers found it difficult to purchase goods due to payment system outages. The fact that the attack took place during the holiday season further exacerbated consumer frustration.
This is not an isolated incident. In December, HUR launched a cyberattack against Gazprombank, one of Russia’s largest financial institutions. The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the bank in November.
Other targets
Other targets were the North Caucasus University, where more than 150 terabytes of data were destroyed, and the state-automated Pravosudie system, which manages electronic document flows for all Russian courts. In October, HUR hackers also targeted websites involved in supplying Russia’s military logistics network, collecting information on troop movements and equipment supplies.
-Recent incidents
The Russian banking sector was also the target of cyberattacks, which disrupted the activities of Alfa Bank, Otkritie Bank and Rostelecom.
Ukrainian intelligence sources indicate that between September 23 and 26, HUR IT specialists carried out cyberattacks against more than 800 servers in various Russian regions.
