In a joint press release dated January 31, 2024, the ministries responsible for energy in Mauritania and Senegal, in collaboration with Pétrosen (Senegal) and the Société Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures (SMH), announced the official opening of the first well of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project. This emblematic project, located on the maritime border between the two countries, represents a major advance in the exploitation of deep-water gas resources.
The GTA field, developed by a strategic alliance including SMH, Pétrosen, BP and Kosmos Energy, is considered one of the largest deepwater natural gas discoveries in the region. The project is a perfect illustration of the successful cooperation between Mauritania and Senegal, two nations determined to exploit their natural resources in a sustainable manner, while respecting the environment and for the direct benefit of the populations and economies of the two countries.
This stage marks a crucial turning point in the development of the project, with the opening of the first well, which crowns several years of technical and logistical efforts. The opening of this well paves the way for the upcoming launch of the marketing of natural gas extracted from the deposit, an expected step which should stimulate the regional economy, while consolidating the strategic position of the two nations in the global energy market.
The authorities expressed their satisfaction with the completion of this phase and reaffirmed their commitment to continuing the work in compliance with international standards in terms of safety and sustainable development. The GTA project is now a symbol of bilateral cooperation and an important lever for the economies of Mauritania and Senegal.
The two countries continue to work hand in hand to maximize the benefits of the deposit, which should play a central role in the energy diversification of the region, with positive spinoffs for future generations.
