Sonic 3 hit French cinemas on December 25, and the third part of our favorite hedgehog is already a hit. After its first weekend, it had already attracted no less than 956,000 spectators in our cinemas, and as of December 29, it had grossed $137,552,000 in the United States. A success therefore, but its writers already have their heads elsewhere. After the Sonic franchise, they would like to tackle another one, just as cult, and they even have a specific game in mind.
Another adaptation of Zelda soon in the works?
Behind each Sonic film, we find the screenwriting duo Pat Casey and Josh Miller. As part of promoting the latest installment, they spoke with IGN. We then asked them what they planned to do next, but especially if they wanted to adapt another video game for the big screen. And as you can imagine, the answer is of course yes, and they already have their sights set on one title in particular, a cult game from the Zelda license: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
We both always loved Wind Waker, I mean, that game is so cinematic! I would really like to work on this film. If we did, I guess we'd broadcast it all over the world. I mean, I can see us doing a Wind Waker spinoff.
As you know, a live-action adaptation of Zelda is already in preparationwhich, in a way, suits them, because bringing Wind Waker to the big screen first would be difficult. The title offered a unique setting in the franchise at the time of its release. In this sense, after the release of the first Zelda film which will lay the foundations of the universe of Hyrule, they are seriously considering offering a new one to the studios, a sort of sequel, with Wind Waker as the main inspiration.
-Other games mentioned
While Casey and Miller are big Zelda fans, they also love many other games. In addition to adapting a Link adventure, they cite for example the Golden Ax franchise. Although stopped for more than 15 years, it left its mark on the minds of players. “I think Golden Axe. That was another damn good multiplayer game on Megadrive.” Casey says.
Miller, for his part, has other inspirations. For example, he mentions A Boy and His Blob, a platform game released in 1989. Casey then responds with Cool Spot, another platform game starring… one of the mascots of the 7 Up brand! In the end, the two screenwriters are teeming with ideas, but which they will have to put aside for the moment. In fact, they are already working on a new project, an adaptation of the excellent It Takes Two produced by Dwayne Johnson.
