Wayne Rooney sacked as manager of Plymouth, dead last in Championship

LONDON — Wayne Rooney was dismissed as manager of Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday, after just seven months in charge of the struggling Championship side.

The famous 39-year-old English striker, a former Manchester United player, was recruited in May, but leaves Plymouth which finds itself in last position in the English second division with only four victories in 23 matches this season.

Their last game was a 2-0 defeat to Oxford United on Sunday, taking Argyle's winless run to nine.

“Plymouth Argyle can confirm that the club and head coach Wayne Rooney have mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement. “We would like to thank Wayne and his team for all their efforts and wish them the best for the future.”

Rooney took the reins at Plymouth after a short 83-day spell at Birmingham, who were demoted from the Championship last season. He has also coached DC United in MLS and Derby County.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Plymouth board,” Rooney said in the club statement. “Thank you also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who make this club such a special place, and to the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as head coach, and I wish them the best for the future.”

With a storied career, Rooney has won five Premier League titles as well as a Champions League. He is also the most capped outfield player in the history of the English national team, with 120 caps.
