Top German leaders, Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his vice-chancellor Robert Habeck, denounced on Tuesday the continued support of American billionaire Elon Musk for the country's far-right party, AfD, two months before the legislative elections.
“You, the citizens, decide (the outcome of the vote). It is not the owners of the social networks who decide,” the chancellor said in his New Year's address which is due to be broadcast on Tuesday evening.
“It is not the one who shouts the loudest who determines what happens next in Germany, but rather the vast majority of decent and reasonable people,” said the Social Democratic head of government.
His vice-chancellor, Minister of the Economy and Climate Change, the ecologist Robert Habeck, also castigated in his own New Year's message the “logic” and the “system” built by Elon Musk.
“Musk strengthens those who weaken Europe. A weak Europe is in the interest of those for whom regulation constitutes an inappropriate limit on their power,” says the Green candidate for chancellor.
The embarrassment in Germany is commensurate with the growing influence that the multibillionaire seems to have on the future Trump presidency, in which he is to take the head of the “Department of Government Efficiency”.
On Saturday, the daily Welt published an article in which the boss of X, spaceX and Tesla assures that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is “the last glimmer of hope” for Germany.
On Monday evening, the richest man in the world once again showed strong support for the AfD by declaring on X, under his pseudonym Kekius Maximus, that the AfD would “win an epic victory” in the elections.
The AfD is credited with 20.5% of voting intentions, up, in an Insa poll published Tuesday by Bild, second behind the conservative opposition, in the lead with 31%.
Elon Musk also described the German president as an “anti-democratic tyrant” on Monday evening on
On Friday, the head of state warned against “external influence” which, according to him, constitutes “a danger for democracy”, particularly when it is expressed in an “open and undisguised manner, as is the case currently, particularly intensively, on the X platform.
