Why won't the warning sirens sound this Wednesday, January 1, 2025?

The first Wednesday of January 2025 being a public holiday, the monthly test of warning sirens relating to the State, municipalities and industrial establishments other than hydraulic developments, is postponed to Wednesday January 8, 2025 at 12:15 p.m.

As usual every first Wednesday of each month, this Wednesday January 1, 2025 marking the start of the new year, the sirens of the Population Alert and Information System (SAIP) will not sound. As the day is a public holiday, the monthly SAIP test has been postponed.

What are the “SAIP” sirens?

The sirens of the Population Alert and Information System are means of alert intended to warn the population of an ongoing danger (or its imminence), the effects of which are likely to harm their physical integrity and which therefore require on their part a reflex behavior of shelter and information on the instructions to apply.

How many sirens are installed in Aveyron?

In the Aveyron department, 33 sirens under the “SAIP” are installed in the municipalities depending on the risk areas (floods or technological):

What behavior should you adopt if the sirens are triggered?

Reminder of the general instructions for behavior in the event of activation of the sirens, outside of exercises or tests on the first Wednesday of the month:

At the signal, you must:

  • Immediately return to an enclosed area, preferably without windows, carefully blocking openings if possible (slots, doors, vents, chimneys, etc.);
  • Stop air conditioning, heating and ventilation; listen to the radio.

What not to do:

  • Stay in your vehicle;
  • Pick up the children from school (teachers are responsible for their safety);
  • Telephone (networks must remain available for emergency services);
  • Stay near the windows;
  • Open the windows to see what's going on outside;
  • Light any flame (risk of explosion);
  • Leave the shelter without instructions from the authorities.

Specific instructions are also applicable for each risk: for example, in the event of a risk of dam failure, you must reach a high point in the municipality. In all cases, you must follow the instructions of the authorities. Reminder of the characteristics of the national alert signal: the alert signal: 3 sequences of 1 minute and 41 seconds, separated by silence. The end of alert signal: continuous sound for 30 seconds. Monthly tests: 1 sequence of 1 minute and 41 seconds on the first Wednesday of each month at noon.
