Panama Canal, Canada, Greenland: Donald Trump’s expansionist dream

Almost three weeks before his return to the White House, Donald Trump dreams of new territorial conquests. Greenland, Panama Canal, Canada, the future American president multiplies the thunderous outings. Decryption.

Not a week goes by without a statement « choc » of Donald Trump. So, for Christmas, the future tenant of the White House had a very special thought for the canal. Panama. The site has been under the full authority of Panama for twenty-five years. But Donald Trump simply wants the United States to regain control. THE Panama Canalit is 80 kilometers that connect Asia to the east coast of the United States, which makes it a strategic route since the canal alone represents 5% of global maritime traffic. According to the canal management authority, five billion dollars in turnover was recorded this year.

Neither for sale nor to give up!

If Donald Trump wants the United States to take back control of the Panama Canalthis is because he considers that there is overcharging for American ship passages. Fake, responds the Panamanian president José Raúl Mulino who explains on the one hand that the canal is neither for sale nor for transfer, and on the other hand, that tolls are the same for all countries. But Donald Trump goes further. This concerns the trade war he is waging against Chine : he believes that Chinese soldiers control this shipping route. This is also false, Panamanian authorities say. The only Chinese presence around the canal is to be found at the two ports at its ends. The fear is that via these companies based in Hong KongChina can have economic data on all the ships circulating there.

Canada and Greenland in the viewfinder

Donald Trump is also interested in different territories in the north of the United States, as Canadawhich he considers to be the 51st American state. This does not prevent him from wanting to increase customs duties on products imported from Canada by 25%, which is worrying in Ottawa. At the end of last week, the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Foreign Affairs visited Donald Trump’s residence to specifically talk about the subject of customs duties.

Regarding Greenland, he wants to buy it, nothing more, nothing less. Donald Trump has his sights set on the largest island in the world because it is rich in natural resources. Lead, iron, zinc, nickel, gold, rare metals, all these raw materials are used in armaments and for the production of electric batteries for example. And then Greenland is full of large deposits of sand, which is precious, sand being very coveted for the construction of buildings.

If Donald Trump increases this type of outings, it is because he knows: he must exist in the media even when he is not in office. Secondly, these could be provocations ultimately intended to lower taxes for American boats transiting through the Panama Canal. But also to review the customs relationship between Canada and the United States or to have access to certain resources in Greenland.

And then we remind you, Donald Trump is also and above all a businessman who knows that sometimes you have to show your muscles, even bluff, to hope to get something!
