Cyprien Sarrazin is “awake and conscious” the day after his impressive fall in Bormio

SKI – It is “awake and conscious”. The news from Cyprien Sarrazin, who was injured in an accident on Friday in Italy, is good. The French Ski Federation gave reassuring news this Saturday, December 28 after an operation which took place during the night to decompress the intracranial hematoma from which Cyprien Sarrazin suffers; this one was “went well”.

Cyprien Sarrazin, winner in Kitzbühel, comes a long way physically, and it’s thanks to his mentality

“His condition is stable, he will be kept under observation for an as yet undetermined period”announced the FFS late Saturday afternoon. It is still too early to discuss the rest of the season for the French team, also affected by an ankle and a vertebra. The skier from Dévoluy experienced a first big shock in 2018 when, after a fall during the giant of Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany), he was hospitalized in intensive care.

Six years later, Cyprien Sarrazin, now world number 2 in downhill, suffered a very heavy fall on Friday during training for the World Cup downhill in Bormio. The French downhiller lost control of his skis on the Stelvio, the slope where the men’s events for the Winter Olympics will take place in 2026.

Two other skiers fell heavily during training, which reignited controversy over the safety of a track considered the most dangerous on the world circuit. Teammate of Cyprien Sarrazin, Nils Allegre, for example, stated on Eurosport that this track “doesn’t deserve the Olympics”.

“The problem is that on Christmas Day, there was a lot of wind and we know what the wind does: it dried the snow from the bottom to the top, which explains why the snow was not uniform on the track which is three kilometers long and which it is impossible to make uniform”defended Markus Waldner, boss of the men’s World Cup after a meeting with representatives of each nation.

The race was won to everyone’s surprise by the Swiss Alexis Monney, 24 years old.

Two French people finished in the top 15: Nils Allegre, 10th and Nils Alphand, 14th.
