Season 2 of Squid Game revealed an unexpected character that references the Marvel universe. Among the new participants in the mortal arena, we discover player 230, nicknamed “Thanos”.
An assumed Marvel nod
From his first appearance in the third episode, Choi Su-bong, aka Thanosstands out for its bold look. Purple hair, nails painted the colors of infinity stones… the nod to the great antagonist of the MCU is obvious. Even his punchline, “My rap will wipe out half of humanity”recalls Thanos’ apocalyptic plan in Avengers: Infinity War.
Ancien rapper and formerly rich Thanks to his music career, Thanos lost his fortune by investing in the cryptocurrency MG Coin, which pushes him to participate in the mortal games. Although he brings unbridled and entertaining energy at first, he quickly proves to be a dangerous and tyrannical characterwilling to do anything to survive, including pushing his opponents to their death during games. Player 230 thus embodies a mixture of despair, ambition and madness.
In the arena, Thanos uses all means to advance: manipulation, opportunistic alliances, and unpredictable behavior due to the consumption of drugs hidden in his necklace. Moreover, his eccentricity and his aggressiveness make him one of the most notable characters of this season.
TOP: a controversial actor
The choice of TOP to play Thanos was deliberate on the part of series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk. In fact, the latter had designed the character before TOP is selected. Executive producer Kim Ji-yeonso explained that TOP’s serious approach to the role made him a good choice, especially considering his previous acting experiences.
TOP was very serious in his approach, and he had already shown his talent in his previous works. So it was a good fit for this role.
Indeed, TOP has moved away from music in recent years. He focused more on comedy and art, and officially left BigBang in 2023 after the end of his contract.
For the record, Thanos’ character makes significant references to drugs, which echoes T.O.P.’s real-life past. In 2017, he was involved in a legal matter related to his marijuana use, which led to a brief legal sentence.
