Paul Lapeira entered his name in the guestbook of the commune of Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët this Saturday, December 21, on the occasion of his return to the South Channel for the end-of-year celebrations. He joins Charles De Gaulle, Alain Souchon and of course Mikaël Cherel. It was under the eyes of elected officials, but also members of the Vélo Club Saint-Hilairien (VCH) that the 24-year-old French road cycling champion signed the register.

Paul Lapeira did not return home empty-handed, since he was carrying numerous jerseys from his Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale team in his bag, which he distributed to all the young people of the cycling club. Already in the afternoon, he surprised them by joining them on the road, during their training. “It was Paul’s idea. He was keen to please all the young people at the club. So we organized this surprise with his mother. When they saw him arrive, they immediately recognized him, they were overjoyed,” explains Franck Waxin, co-president of the VCH.

A visit before flying to Australia

It has become a habit for the French champion to meet his training club before the end of year celebrations. “He always comes to say hello when he comes back here. That’s great of him,” said Franck Waxin. Many young people rushed to their idol to sign their new jerseys and accessories of all kinds. This is the last opportunity for them for a long time, since in January, Paul Lapeira flies to Australia to compete in the Santos Tour Down Under, the first event on the WorldTour calendar.
