Zach Werenski collected four assists, while the Russian duo of Kirill Marchenko and Dmitri Voronkov collected three points each, to help the Columbus Blue Jackets defeat the Boston Bruins 6-2 on Friday.
Prior to Friday’s games, the Jackets were the team scoring the most goals at home with an average of 4.06 per game in front of their fans. Friday evening was no exception, as Dean Evason’s men scored six goals against the Bruins.
Sean Monahan first opened the scoring in the first period during a five-man attack, in his 800th game in the NHL. Werenski and Marchenko were complicit in the veteran’s 12th of the season. The Bruins’ response came from the stick of Paval Zacha. The Czech accepted the delivery from his compatriot David Pastrnak to create equality.
The second period was all to the advantage of the Jackets. Adam Fantilli and Monahan first beat Joonas Korpisalo in a span of 73 seconds to give Columbus a two-goal lead.
Voronkov then scored twice on the power play and the Jackets were comfortably ahead 5-1 after 40 minutes of play.
Accomplice of two goals for his team at this point in the match, Marchenko decided that he too wanted to find the back of the net. The Russian scored his team’s fifth unanswered goal early in the third period. Charlie Coyle added the Bruins’ second goal a minute later.
Korpisalo was not very effective against his former team, giving up six times in front of 33 shots. Elviz Merzlikins got the better of his former teammate by stopping 23 pucks.
The two teams will face each other again on Saturday evening, this time on the Boston side.
