Windows 11 24H2 adds a new bug to its long list of problems and it is not the least. • If you install Windows 11 24H2 via CD or USB, “the device may end up in a state where it can no longer accept future security updates”
  • The malfunction is linked to the October 2024 (KB5044284) and November 2024 (KB5046617) patches
  • To avoid this problem, Microsoft recommends “not installing Windows 11 version 24H2 with the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates”

Since its release in October 2024, Windows 11 24H2 has had a series of bugs. Some are less serious than others but still annoying, such as the sudden removal of sound. But the latest problem is a little scary since it prevents installing updates on top of the October 2024 (KB5044284) and November 2024 (KB5046617) patches.

Windows 11 24H2 blocks the installation of future updates

The bug affects those who have installed Windows 11 via physical media, CD or USB key. Installations made via the official Media Creation Tool are also affected. Microsoft specifies that this malfunction does not occur during installations carried out via Windows Update or from the Update Catalog site.

Microsoft has officially addressed the issue, stating that “when physical media is used to install Windows 11 version 24H2, the device may end up in a state where it can no longer accept future Windows security updates. This situation only occurs when the installation media includes the October 2024 or November 2024 updates as part of the installation (these updates were released between October 8, 2024 and November 12, 2024). »

The Redmond firm offers a workaround to this problem: do not use the October and November patches when installing via CD or USB key. The December update is not affected by the bug. Microsoft therefore recommends “not to install Windows 11 version 24H2 with the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates. It is preferable to use installation media that includes the December 2024 monthly security update (released on 10 December 2024) or later. »

The company is carrying out its investigation and promises to give more detailsshortly. This is bad news for users of Windows 11 24H2 which, despite its great new features, has been plagued by recurring bugs since its launch. It remains to be hoped that the launch of Windows 12 will not be accompanied by so many problems and instabilities.
