A 13-year-old teenager died this Wednesday afternoon in the Arc 2000 ski resort, in Savoie. He was swept away by an avalanche in an off-piste area.
Drama in Les Arcs (Savoie). A young 13-year-old skier, who was with six members of his family, was swept away by an avalanche this Wednesday early in the afternoon. The avalanche risk was 3/5 when the group of skiers set off off-piste early in the afternoon.
The conditions were tempting, with sunshine after an intense snowy episode in recent days. Around 3:22 p.m., trackers alerted. In the distance, they saw a mass of snow break away in the Aiguille Rouge d’Arc 2000 sector and fall on the seven French people.
Two dog teams, around ten rescuers and a helicopter rushed to the scene 20 minutes later. Among the family, a 13-year-old teenager is only spotted thanks to his pair of skis sticking out of the snow, because he was not equipped with an avalanche victim detector.
The child was taken care of by a doctor and airlifted, but died around 5 p.m. According to Le Dauphiné Libération, a surfer could be the cause of the snow slide. This is what the investigation opened by the Albertville public prosecutor’s office will have to demonstrate.
Off-piste, with a guide and a transmitter
The risk of avalanche was marked on almost all of the massifs, with an index of 3 out of 5. A level of risk which requires vigilance, according to Pierre Dutrievoz, high mountain guide in Les Arcs.
“The risk 3/5, it remains tricky, he explains. The coat is stabilizing. The idea is always to leave with a guide. On the ground, our eyes are spinning in every direction, we are on the lookout and as soon as we are off-piste, we must be equipped. The DVA (avalanche victim detector), it is a small transmitter which emits beeps and which will allow. to be spotted very quickly and we favor gentle slopes, where there are no large vertical slopes above, because steep slopes can go away, that’s for sure.
