War, poll in 7 countries (including Italy): support for Kiev collapses until victory

A YouGov poll shows willingness to support Ukraine “until it wins” has fallen sharply across Western Europe at a critical time for the country, while Donald Trump's imminent return to the White House raises questions about the country's future. The YouGov survey, reported by the Guardian, in , Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Denmark and the UK found that the public's desire to support Ukraine to victory, even if it means prolonging the war, it has fallen in all seven countries over the past 12 months. The poll found that support for an alternative resolution to the conflict – a negotiated end to the fighting, even if that left Russia in control of parts of Ukraine – increased in all countries, and was the preferred option in four of them. The poll showed that willingness to support Ukraine until it defeats Russia remained high in Sweden (50%) and Denmark (40%), while the UK was at 36%, but those levels fell by as much as 14%. points compared to January's figures of 57%, 51% and 50%. Over the same period, the percentages of people saying they prefer a negotiated peace rose to 55% from 45% in Italy, to 46% in 38% in Spain, to 43% from 35% in France and to 45% from 38% in Germany, with a corresponding decline in willingness to support Ukraine to victory. With less than a month until Trump's return, majorities or near majorities in these countries believe it is likely that US President-elect Trump will cut support for Ukraine: 62% of Germans, 60% of Spaniards, 56% of British, 52% of the French and 48% of the Italians.
