the secrets of the series now showing on Netflix

Nn 2021, “Squid Game” surprisingly dominated Netflix's charts as the most-watched series globally. The second season, consisting of seven episodes, is out on December 26, while the third season is already in the post-production phase. “Squid Game 2” aims to replicate the success of the first season, with Hwang Dong-hyuk returning as director, writer and producer. The director completed the script for the sequels in just six months, stating: “I'm not sure I'll ever be able to write anything that fast again.”

The protagonists return to the survival game with new deadly challenges. Lee Jung-jae reprises his role as Gi-hun and praised the director, calling him “a genius.” The project has also opened international doors for Lee Byung-hun, who will reprise his role as the antagonist, underlining how rewarding it is to attract new viewers with this work. Wi Ha-jun and Gong Yoo will also return, while new entries include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul and more.

Expectations are high, and the second season has already received a nomination for best drama series at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards. In Korea, however, history teaches us that sequels rarely surpass the originals, as evidenced by Yang Dong-geun, in his cast debut.

The production of “Squid Game 2” also addressed the issue of diversity, introducing a transgender character played by Park Song-hoon. Hwang commented that, unfortunately, there is still little openness regarding the LGBTQ+ community in Korea: “Unfortunately, many groups are marginalized and neglected by society, which is heartbreaking.”

Finally, the “Squid Game” universe continues to expand with plans for an English version and a reality show inspired by the series.
