A passenger plane with 67 people on board crashed near the airport of the Kazakh city of Aktau, on the shores of the Caspian Sea: Kazakhstan's emergency services announced this. Thirty-five people died in the crash while thirty-two survived, but this is still a provisional toll. According to Kazakh authorities, the crashed plane was an Azerbajan Airlines Embraer 190, which was traveling from Baku to Grozny, the capital of the Russian republic of Chechnya.
The crash was apparently caused by a collision with a flock of birds, Sputnik Azerbaijan writes, citing the airline. “There were 67 people on board, including five crew members. Information on the injured is being clarified. According to preliminary data, there are 25 survivors. Twenty-two were transported to hospital,” reads the statement from press office of the Kazakh Emergencies Ministry. According to the Ministry of Emergencies, 150 firefighters are putting out the fire at the accident site.
The press office of the Kazakh ministry specified that on board the Azerbaijan Airlines plane, flying from Baku to Grozny in Chechnya, there were 37 Azeri citizens, 6 Kazakhs, 3 Kyrgyz and 16 Russians. There were no children among the passengers.
