Kazakhstan, airliner headed for Grozny crashes. The prosecutor's office: 35 dead, 32 survivors. “Bird strike” hypothesis

A passenger plane with 74 people on board crashed near the airport of the Kazakh city of Aktau, on the shores of the Caspian Sea: Kazakhstan's emergency services announced this. According to Kazakh authorities, the crashed plane was an Azerbajan Airlines Embraer 190, which was traveling from Baku to Groznythe capital of the Russian republic of Chechnya.

The dead and the survivors

There is still uncertainty over the death toll and survivors of the plane crash involving an Azerbaijani flight in Kazakhstan. According to the General Prosecutor's Office of Azerbaijan, there are 32 survivors, while according to the Kazakh Ministry for Emergencies there are 29. The ministry also revised the number of people on board, from 67 to 69, including 5 crew members. Regional authorities also reported that 4 bodies have so far been recovered from the crash site. Russian agencies handed it over.

According to the Ministry of Emergencies, 150 firefighters are putting out the fire at the accident site. The Central Asian country's emergencies ministry also said survivors were being treated at a hospital near where the crash occurred.

The Embraer 190 plane forced to make an emergency landing

Azerbaijan Airlines said that the Embraer 190with flight number J2-8243, was flying from Baku to Grozny, the capital of Russian Chechnya, but had been forced to make an emergency landing about 3 km (1.8 miles) from the Kazakh city of Aktau. The Russian news agencies said the plane had been diverted due to fog in Grozny.

In fact, the crew of the Embraer E190AR of the Azerbaijani company – before the accident – had reported problems and had been first diverted to Makhachkala and then to Aktau, according to sources at Grozny airport. The plane then flew over Aktau airport and requested an emergency landing. But the pilots were unable to control the descent and the aircraft hit the ground with its nose and exploded in a fireball.
