The young promise of snowboard cross, Sophie Hediger, has died at the age of 26. The athlete was a member of the Swiss national team and was the victim of an accident in the mountains on 23 December, while she was on the slopes of Arosa, in the Canton of Grisons. The alert went off shortly after 1pm: the young woman, engaged in a descent on a slope at around 1,800 meters above sea level, was hit by an avalanche. He was in the company of another skier who, after the accident, promptly alerted the emergency services. Rescuers intervened as soon as possible, but when they found Sophie, unfortunately there was nothing left that could be done. Despite the efforts of the emergency doctor, the young athlete was declared lifeless.
Two podiums in the World Cup
The news of his death sparked deep emotion in the sector. Swiss-Ski, the Swiss ski federation, expressed its sorrow at the loss. In a note, he said: «We are shocked: our thoughts go to Sophie's family, to whom we express our deepest condolences. She spent a lot of time in Arosa, where she dedicated herself to freeriding, a passion she loved with all her heart.” The 26-year-old had achieved two World Cup podiums in the 2023/2024 season and was ambitiously preparing for the World Championships in St. Moritz, where she had already achieved an important second place. Furthermore, in 2022 he had the honor of participating in the Beijing Olympics.
