The Russian cargo ship Ursa Major sank in the Mediterranean Sea after an explosion in the engine room e two Russian citizens are missing. This was reported by the crisis unit of the Russian Foreign Ministry, as reported by Interfax. They were on board 16 crew membersall Russian citizens. Of these, 14 people were taken to safety at the port of Cartagena. The ship sank in international waters between Aguilas, in the Spanish province of Murcia, and the city of Oran in Algeria.

Sources from the Spanish Society for Maritime Safety and Rescue reported to LaPresse that the warning call from the Russian freighter Ursa Major was received yesterday, when the vessel was approximately 57 miles off the coast of Almeria. As per protocol, the ship closest to the Ursa Major was then contacted and reported adverse weather conditions, a lifeboat in the water and the Russian cargo ship listing to starboard. At that point, the sources report, in a joint operation between the maritime rescue centers of Almeria, Cartagena and Madrid, they were mobilized and sent to the area the Helimer 205 helicopter, the Salvamar Draco vessel and the Clara Campoamor vessel. After locating the lifeboat, the Salvamar Draco rescued the 14 people on board and transferred them to the Spanish port of Cartagena. According to the story of the rescued people, the ship's cargo consisted of empty containers in the hold and 2 cranes on the deck. Subsequently, the sources said, a Russian warship arrived in the area and took command of the rescue operations between Spanish and Algerian waters. The Russian cargo ship sank during the night. The Spanish maritime rescue units are today in the area where the cargo sank in a preventive operation to remove any afloat objects dangerous for navigation and to monitor any water pollution following the accident.
