Strong wind and damage in Messina and the province, trees and poles fallen on the outskirts and in the centre

Christmas Eve marked by bad weather in Messina. Strong gusts of cold wind, hail mixed with rain, accompany the city to the first end-of-year celebrations. And there are already different areas of the capital and the province with obvious consequences due to bad weather including flooding, fallen trees, detached plaster.

Many interventions by the fire brigade have been carried out in the last few hours, most of which relate to unsafe trees, flooding and loose plaster. The municipal police led by Commander Giovanni Giardina were also involved. Unsafe scaffolding in Via dei Mille forced part of the road to be closed. The company intervened to fix the scaffolding but the police are on duty to prevent pedestrians from passing through. In via Garibaldi large branches occupy the roadway just as in via degli Orti a tree was felled by the fury of the wind and remained balanced on the power line. In via Luciano Manara, however, a torn pole hit a parked car. Similar situation in via Altomonte, above the Gazzi prison, where the collapse of two public lighting poles blocked the road. Fortunately, at that moment, no cars were passing on the road.

Also inconvenienced in Galati due to the collapse of trees and in Santa Margherita.

A situation that has imposed a series of restrictions in the city. Mayor Federico Basile has issued an ordinance requiring the closure of municipal villa parks and cemeteries until tomorrow.

Difficulties also in the province where a section of the state road 113 Settentrionale Sicula was closed, in both directions, in the Gioiosa Marea area. Until there are favorable weather conditions, a detour is planned on the A18 Messina-Catania. Anas teams are on site to manage the event.
