After much chatter, we now finally have certainty about his next work Christopher Nolan. Universal has in fact announced that the British filmmaker will adapt none other than Homer's Odyssey. The release is scheduled for July 17, 2026.

Christopher Nolan's next film, The Odyssey, is a mythical action epic shot across the globe using brand-new IMAX film technology – the studio has announced. The film brings the Homer saga to IMAX theater screens for the first time and will be released in theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026

Homer's ancient Greek poem tells the story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, exploring themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning, and fighting against divine will. The tale includes iconic episodes such as his encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the mermaids and the witch-goddess Circe, culminating in his reunion with his wife Penelope.

While this may be the most notable adaptation of the text to date, the poem was previously adapted into the 1954 Italian film Ulyssesdirected by Mario Camerini and played by Kirk Douglasas well as in the 1997 miniseries The Odysseydirected by Andrei Konchalovsky and played by Armand Assante. The most recent transposition of the work dates back to 2024 Ralph Fiennes e Juliette Binoche who played Odysseus and Penelope in The return by Uberto Pasolini (here is our review). Also Brother, where are you? by the Coen brothers released in 2000 drew inspiration from the poem.

As previously announced, Nolan's latest film will feature protagonists Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o e Charlize Theron.

It is expected that the filming of The Odyssey start early next year. Marking Nolan 's second film for Universal, in the wake of the of Oppenheimerthe chosen summer date of 2026 falls within the window often used by that director, as was the case with his historical drama with Cillian Murphy and the previous one Tenet.
