Universal Pictures announced on Twitter that the Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan will try his hand at the film adaptation of one of the most beloved classics of world literature: The Odyssey of Homer. The film, titled The Odysseyhits theaters on July 17, 2026, promising an epic viewing experience using IMAX technology.
The plot, which narrates Ulysses' long and adventurous journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War, is full of myths and legendary creatures that have fascinated generations of readers. Encounters with Cyclopes, mermaids and witches, challenges against the gods and an unstoppable desire to return home to his beloved Penelope: these are just some of the elements that will make The Odyssey an unmissable film in 2026.
Although it is not the first film adaptation of the Greek poem, previously adapted into the 1954 film Ulyssesdirected by Mario Camerini with Kirk Douglas, Nolan is preparing to create the most ambitious and spectacular version ever. For this project, the director has assembled a stellar cast that includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o e Charlize Theron.
The filming of The Odyssey will begin in 2025, marking Nolan's second consecutive film for Universal, following the success of Oppenheimer.
