The film saga of James Bond is at a crossroads. A crossroads that has been going on for a while to be honest. After the Daniel Craig era, acclaimed by critics and audiences, there is still no confirmation on the next interpreter of the famous secret agent nor on the director of the next film.
Who will be the new James Bond?
According to the Wall Street Journal, the historical producers of the saga, Barbara Broccoli e Gregg Wilsonthey cannot reach an agreement on the future of the character. Wilson proposed broadening the criteria for the new 007, opening the door to an actor of color, a woman or a gay man. Broccoli, while not excluding a non-white actor, argues that Bond should remain a British man. However, both agree on the need to choose an interpreter in his thirties. Among the names circulated, that of Aaron Taylor-Johnsonbut no confirmation has arrived so far. Henry Cavillalready close to the part in the past, remains an option; While Idris Elbaa candidate for years, continues to represent a possibility in the debate on the inclusiveness of the new 007.
The role of the villain is also a subject of debate. Broccoli seems reluctant to adopt contemporary archetypes such as the billionaire autocrat, believing it to be a stereotype that has already been widely exploited. The situation is further complicated by conflicts between the producers and Amazon, which acquired MGM Studios in 2021. Broccoli would have criticized the idea of transforming the franchise into a “shared universe” on the Marvel or DC modelfearing that such a choice would dilute Bond's cinematic identity. This approach contrasts with Amazon's model, which focuses on multiplatform franchises (see the Citadel case).
Currently, the project for the next film is therefore stalled. There is no script, nor a director, nor a leading actor, and the production therefore seems far from the beginning.
A saga at risk of oblivion?
The latest film, No Time to Die (2021), marked the end of an era. The lack of concrete progress raises questions about Bond's future in an increasingly crowded film market. The delay could reduce the character's appeal, especially among new generations accustomed to constant productions and expanding narrative universes.
The next chapter in the saga will be crucial in determining whether James Bond will remain an iconic figure of cinema or slip into irrelevance.
