“The leukemia compromises the immune system, the patient cannot have contact with other people. For me, who am 'a social animal', it was a hard blow. Social media helped me a lot in this.” These are the words of Giusy Mirabile33 years old – “sick but not at war” – and now “star” of TikTok where he reached over 291 thousand 'likes' telling his treatment journey on the web and helping theSanta Chiara hospital of Pisa.
Sicilian, who arrived under the Tower more than 10 years ago to study social services, at the age of 27 she fell ill with an acute form of leukemia which left her with a 7% hope of survival: “At the Santa Chiara hospital, Dr. Caracciolo and his staff did everything they could to save me,” he recalls. After the first in 2023, Giusy is facing her second recurrence: “I had had a wonderful summer, but in September I felt I wasn't well. I took a sample and when I called from the laboratory I had already understood what was happening”. Thus began yet another hospitalization, documented on her Tiktok profile: “To pass the days I posted videos and did live shows. I went 'viral' and many started writing to me asking if they could do something for me”, she continues.
Taken by surprise, Giusy did her best to help the entire department: “After Covid, healthcare was abandoned. I was surprised when, upon delivery of the list of objects to obtain for hospitalization, I read the towels: a hematological patient had I needed a new outfit every day and therefore also clean towels every day. I couldn't accept this shortage and, when people wanted to help me via social media, I asked a nurse who manages the department which items we were missing your directions, I have created an Amazon list – then published on Tiktok – with all the shortcomings, from packs of towels to baby covers. It was a success.”
“The head teacher Galimberti – he recalls – came to me saying: 'Giusy, please stop. We no longer know where to put all the donations that are coming. Now we have supplies for the future too.”
Another way to help Giusy is to become a donor bone marrow and blood with Admo and Avis: “Donating is simple and non-invasive. Soon I will have to face another marrow transplantI hope there are as many donors as possible.” Now his hospitalization is over: the last cycle of chemotherapy worked: “I have 1.1% residual disease. A result like this is incredible if you think about the devastating therapies of years ago. It was the first time that this type of chemo was administered in Italy. Now they always tell me: 'You are a unique case'. And I really feel like that.”
