“Football must become credible again.” Word of Ezio Maria Simonelli, new president of the Lega Serie A, interviewed by la Republic. His election, which arrived with 14 votes in favor at the second assembly, is still contested by a minority group of clubs that refer to the president of Lazio, Claudio Lotito. But it also comes in a climate of new harmony in the relations between the League itself and the FIGC: “I like the word peacemaker – he tells the Roman newspaper, then returning to the protests following his election – the fight was not very fair, honors are given to the winner”.
In the interview Simonelli explained that he was was ready to make a conciliatory speech even towards the oppositionbut clarifies “I will listen to everyone's requests, not two or three”.
The interview addresses various topics, from stadiums to young people, but also returns to climate created on Friday at the end of the league meeting that led to his election but not to its immediate proclamation as usual: “hallucinating”, Simonelli defines it. He continues: “It's the first time a president has been elected and he hasn't been called to thank.” There is no doubt about the next steps, starting from the council convened in the next few days by president Casini who, following a procedure not actually foreseen by the Lega statute, would have had to judge on his candidacy also in light of some roles potentially in conflict of interest: ” He was called up illegitimately, there will be no judgement. If anyone thinks he lied, report me. I resolved all the incompatibilities, the real ones and other more forced ones: it was a sacrifice, even financially, but I love football and I'm committed.”
