The weather forecasts for the next few days predict new bad weather in Italy, also for Christmas. What will happen? Today, Saturday 21 December, we will have an improvement in the weather, but as early as tomorrow a new disturbance will arrive which will primarily affect the Alps and then the Centre-South. Christmas week will therefore pass with cold and temperatures below average seasonal, but also with snowfall. Here are all the details.
Weather for the next few days: brief improvement and then bad weather returns
According to the weather forecast for the next few days, after today's brief improvement, we will still have bad weather in Italy. On this day the weather will gradually improve thanks to the intense disturbance that has crossed Italy in the last few hours moving away towards Greece. Therefore, the strong winds will tend to ease, albeit partially, leaving room for a calmer situation. Despite this we will have a general thermal decrease caused by the mass of cold air arriving following the cloud system.
And' other disturbance – number six of the month of December – will appear on Italy Sunday 22 December. More intense and widespread phenomena may occur by the end of the day in the Alps and in the Centre-South. The disturbance will persist until Christmas in the middle Adriatic and in the South with also strong northern ventilation. The climate will be decidedly winter with temperatures even below average, especially in the Centre-South. Thanks to these climatic conditions, snowfalls will be possible up to low altitudes on the Apennine mountains, while in the rest of Italy the Christmas period will be characterized by stable and dry weather.
The forecasts in detail
The weekend starts today, according to the weather forecast, with a mostly sunny Saturday, except for some clouds in the central Adriatic regions, in the South and on the Islands, but with little rainfall concentrated mainly on the coasts of Abruzzo, Puglia, lower Calabria and northern Sicily , gradually running out. SundayHowever, in the morning we will have large clearings in the central Adriatic regions, in the South and in Sicily. The sky will be cloudy elsewhere with isolated rain over the west of Sardinia and snowfall above 1200 meters in the Western Alps. There may be thinning fog between lower Veneto and Polesine. In the afternoon, sunny spells persist between the lower Adriatic and Ionian Seas while there will be a prevalence of clouds elsewhere with scattered precipitation over the Alps, North-East, central Tyrrhenian regions, Marche, Campania and Sardinia. Snow above 600-1200 meters in the Alpine sector.
Christmas week it will open with a new disturbance ready to move quickly towards the south-east to involve the central Adriatic regions and the southern ones. Thunderstorms will be possible along the lower Tyrrhenian side, while in the Apennines between Abruzzo and Basilicata the snow level will fluctuate between 500 and 800 metres. Snow also around 800-1000 meters in the reliefs of Calabria and northern Sicily.
A cold front, associated with an air mass of Arctic-maritime origin, will pour over the central-eastern Mediterranean and partly also over Italy between 23 and 25 December through an impetuous northern current. In this way over the course of on Monday 23 December we will again see a strong strengthening of the wind, with gusts up to stormy weather between Sardinia and Sicily and on the central-southern Adriatic Sea.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be characterized by cold especially in the central-southern Adriatic regions and in the far south where, in addition to the intense cold, accentuated by the north wind, snow is also expected. In these two days of celebration it will be possible to snow widely between the south of the Marche, Abruzzo, Molise and Irpinia up to around 300-400 meters (locally even lower). During Christmas night the snow should also mostly affect Basilicata and northern Calabria up to very low altitudes, and northern Sicily up to around 600 metres.
Where will the snow fall? A white Christmas therefore seems to be looming for cities such as L'Aquila, Campobasso, Potenza but it cannot be ruled out that the white ribbons will also be seen in Macerata, Teramo, Isernia, Avellino and Matera.
