The wave of cold, rain and snow close to Christmas is increasingly certain, an event that has been missing for several years in the Mediterranean, especially in the central-southern regions where the last snowflakes at low hill altitudes at Christmas date back to around 20 years ago.
A river of cold air will reach Italy between the evening of Sunday 22nd and Monday 23rd December, favoring the development of a very difficult depression, which will keep us company for several consecutive days. In fact it will not be a hit and run of the cold, but a disturbance literally stuck between Italy and the Balkans, ready to generate rain, showers and snowfall on several occasions.
The Adriatic side and the south will be the sectors affected by the bad weather, between 23 and 26 December. The snow will arrive at hilly levels, at times up to the low hills of the central Apennines!
The white Christmas will become a reality in the Apennines and could become so up to altitudes of approximately 300-400 meters Between Marche, Abruzzo and Molise. Snow until 400-500 meters over Puglia and Basilicata on Christmas night, until 500-600 meters on the rest of the south.
The coldest anomalies, in fact, are expected in central-southern Italy. The north will see more or less average days, but in a stable context.
Let's see what awaits us in detail in the next seven days:
Saturday 21 December: last clusters in the south with strong mistral, improves quickly. Peaceful elsewhere. Temperatures dropping.
Sunday 22 December: stable everywhere in the morning, rapidly increasing clouds from the afternoon and scattered phenomena on the Tyrrhenian side. Snowfall in the border Alps, flakes at low altitude by evening in the Triveneto.
Monday 23 December: Arctic irruption arriving in the day before Christmas. Cold front will cross the central-south, snow arriving up to the hills of the central Apennines, over 800 meters in the south.
Tuesday 24 December: depression in the Ionian Sea, bad weather widespread in the south and middle-lower Adriatic with snowfall up to the hills, up to 200 meters in the internal areas of Abruzzo, 400-600 meters in the rest of the central-south! Clear and cold in the north and mid-upper Tyrrhenian Sea.
Wednesday 25 December: Christmas in the cold, strong north winds in the south, scattered showers and snowflakes up to 400-500 meters in the south. Episodes of havoc right up to the coasts. Clear in the north.
Thursday 26 December: Instability persists in the south with a cold and fully wintry climate. Clear in the north and much of the center.
All rain forecast until December 26:
Friday 27 December: residual instability in the south and lower Adriatic to be assessed. Stable elsewhere. Cold climate.
