A serious one attack he hit MagdeburgGerman city, during the Christmas celebrations. An SUV plowed into a crowd at a Christmas market, causing two deaths and injuring 68 other people. Investigations are ongoing and have led to the arrest of Taleb Al Abdulmohsen, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor.
The tragic event that shocked Germany
On the evening of the dramatic attack, a black SUV ran over visitors to the Magdeburg Christmas market. After the accident, the driver got out of the vehicle with his hands raised and surrendered to the police, who immediately surrounded him at gunpoint. According to witnesses, the vehicle moved in a zigzag, in an attempt to hit as many people as possible.
An eyewitness reported to the local newspaper People's voice that the car accelerated right in the area of the market where many children were, the “Maerchen-bereich”, dedicated to fairy tale characters. Heartbreaking scenes, with injured people on the ground and improvised rescue operations, characterized the moment following the attack, which was also captured in videos circulated on social media.
Who is Taleb Al Abdulmohsen, the arrested attacker
Taleb Al Abdulmohsen, 50, is a doctor of Saudi origin who has lived in Germany since 2006. In addition to having refugee status, he resides permanently in Bernburg, in the district of Salzland, and works in a private healthcare facility. Al Abdulmohsen stood out for his anti-Islam positions, so much so that he fled Saudi Arabia as an atheist.
Despite calling himself a leftist, Taleb was a follower of controversial figures such as Alex Jones, Elon Musk and Tommy Robinson, a well-known British right-wing activist. In a tweet, he wrote: “Anyone described by mainstream media as a radical or right-wing extremist is telling the truth”. His figure is complex: he was active in the local Saudi community and often helped asylum seekers, particularly women, but his messages on social media highlighted a sense of persecution and open criticism of the Islamization of Germany.
The first hypotheses on the motive
The German authorities exclude, at least for the moment, an Islamist motive. The police stated that it is still too early to classify the episode, leaving open two main hypotheses: a possible psychological disorder of the attacker or a deliberate act motivated by personal ideologies.
According to the weekly The mirrorTaleb Al Abdulmohsen's profile is not compatible with a jihadist attack, indeed, his frequent public statements portray him as critical of Islam. However, there is no shortage of suspicions of possible links with the German far right, a hypothesis that the authorities are investigating.
The investigation is underway
A video captured immediately after the attack shows the arrest of the attacker and testifies to the chaos generated by the incident. Investigators are analyzing every detail, while high-level politicians, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz, have visited the site of the attack to pay tribute to the victims.
The case brings to mind the 2016 attack in Berlin, when a Tunisian drove a truck into another Christmas market, causing 13 deaths. While the two episodes have significant differences, they both highlight the vulnerability of public events during the holidays.
Germany awaits further developments with apprehension, while the Magdeburg Christmas market, a symbol of celebration and tradition, remains a wounded but not broken place.
