The Serie A League has a new number one. It's about Ezio Maria Simonelliwho in the second vote and as the sole candidate, was elected with a majority of 14 votes against 6. Silvio Berlusconi's former accountant, former member of the board of Mediaset and auditor of Mondadori, he was pushed into the Lega Calcio by Adriano Galliani and Beppe Marotta which had the support of all the big teams (Milan, Roma and Atalanta) and which instead saw the patrons of Lazio and Naples, Claudio Lotito and Aurelio De Laurentiis as strong opponents.

In the first vote it was Torino's patron, Urbano Cairo, who failed to reach a majority with 13 votes out of the 14 needed for the election (Mario Draghi was also voted for). Today during the second election the quorum was reached with 14 votes in favor and 6 votes against. Simonelli is therefore the new president of the Lega Serie A and succeeds the mandate of the outgoing president Lorenzo Casini. Simonelli had already been acting president for the Lega Serie A in April 2017 and was also president of the board of auditors.
In order to accept the position he made the formal gesture of resigning from the positions he held in Fininvest, resolving the “conflict of interest” raised by the owner of Torino, Urbano Cairo and which had led to his non-election in the first round of voting. Today the final vote saw Lazio, Napoli, Lecce, Udinese, Torino and Verona among the 6 abstentions (they all voted blank). The issue of ineligibility will however have to be ratified in a next league council before the handover with Casini. The aim is for the new president to be able to use the Riyadh Super Cup as his first official outing in his new role.
