“I thank all the rescuers. Thanks to the healthcare staff who are treating me. I’m fine now and I’m out of danger: I just need to recover and rest. Thank you all.” These are the first words of Ottavia Piana, the 32-year-old speleologist from Adro who was trapped for days in a cave in the Bueno Fonteno Abyss, almost 600 meters deep, freed and brought back to the surface only at the end of an operation that continued for more than 75 consecutive hours, completed thanks to the collective commitment of 159 rescuers.
How is Ottavia Piana
The young speleologist is currently hospitalized at the Papa Giovanni hospital in Bergamo: it is from here that her first statements were released. Ottavia is awake, conscious and lucid, but is obviously being kept under very close observation: she is in the intensive care unit and the doctors, the hospital says, have not yet resolved the prognosis. She is undergoing sedation to ease the pain of her wounds: she has suffered several fractures, and for the record she has already undergone surgery.
“Best wishes for a speedy recovery”
“I extend my best wishes to Ottavia Piana for a speedy recovery – the words of the general director of Areu, Massimo Lombardo – and once again I want to underline not only the excellence and readiness of our emergency network, but also express my most Deep thanks to all the professionals, volunteers and operators who made this intervention possible. Our system worked very well despite the complexity and duration of the operation.”
